Sustainability.
Responsibility. Action.
Satisfying the growing demand for energy while maximizing our contribution to sustainable development — for current and future generations.
Our aim: net zero, just transition, lasting value
Our aim is to satisfy the growing demand for energy and products by maximizing our contribution to sustainable development, in order to meet current needs without compromising the needs of future generations, with a commitment to become a net zero emissions company by 2050 in line with the objectives of the Paris Agreement.
This policy was approved by the Board of Directors of Equus Petroleum B.V. on December 21, 2022, and is reviewed annually. It applies to all operations and wholly-owned subsidiaries.

Decarbonising our operations
From green hydrogen to large‑scale CCS and industry‑leading efficiency.
Green hydrogen – EnergHys
CO₂‑free hydrogen via electrolysis of water, powered by renewable electricity. New plant online Q1 2029, producing truly green hydrogen for refining and mobility.
50 MW electrolyser · 2029Carbon capture – Azur
Capturing CO₂ from existing hydrogen plants to produce blue hydrogen. Liquefied CO₂ shipped to depleted North Sea fields for permanent storage.
>50% emissions reduction · Q3 2026Partner: Carbon Connect Delta, Aramis
Energy efficiency
24% efficiency improvement (2008–2021). One of the world's most energy‑efficient refineries. Residual heat reused via Sloewarmte Project.
-24% intensity · ongoingZeeland Solar Park
Almost twelve hectares – 22 football pitches – with over 28,000 solar panels. One of the largest industrial solar parks in the Netherlands.
On a summer day, the park supplies nearly a quarter of our refinery electricity demand.
High biodiversity value
The position of the panels allows for rich flora between rows. The land is managed in an insect- and bee-friendly way, with stone clover borders and specially formulated biodiversity mixtures. Results: increase in small mammals, insects, and seed‑eating birds.
Protecting people and the planet
Our environmental activities focus on air, water, subsoil, waste, and biodiversity.
Gas flaring reduction
Zero routine flaring by 2030. Continuous investment in flare gas recovery.
Rational water use
Closed‑loop cooling, wastewater treatment, and aquifer recharge projects.
Waste management
Circular economy approach: 92% recycling rate at refineries.
Biodiversity
Oystercatcher protection, orchid management, wetland preservation, partridge fields.
Remediation
Historical site restoration and soil bioremediation programs.
Environmental monitoring
Certified lab (since 2016) analysing air, water, soil 24/7 against thresholds.
Flora and fauna of our operating regions
First‑of‑its‑kind illustrated trilingual handbook demonstrating biodiversity in Atyrau and Zeeland.
Quick Guide to Biotopes (PDF, 12 MB)Continuous environmental monitoring
TCO‑inspired comprehensive system: atmospheric air, water, soil samples collected and analyzed in our state‑of‑the‑art certified laboratory (operational since 2016).
Reports and KPIs
Verified environmental, social, and governance metrics.
Our products
We keep the world moving – reliably, efficiently, with lower carbon intensity.
